Custom Glass Balustrade Safety Rail Systems — FAQ

What is the difference between frameless and semi-frameless glass balustrades?
Frameless systems use a continuous base channel or spigot mount at the floor level with no vertical posts — the glass panels are the structural element. Semi-frameless systems use minimal posts at panel joints with glass infill between them. Frameless systems provide the cleanest look but require a structural floor slab or stringer to anchor the base channel.
What thickness of glass is required for balustrades in Florida?
Florida Building Code requires balustrade glass to meet specific load criteria based on height and unsupported span. We typically specify 3/8" fully tempered heat-soaked glass for residential applications under 42 inches height, and 1/2" for commercial or taller systems. All glass is certified to ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201.
Can I get tinted or frosted glass panels for privacy?
Yes. We offer clear, bronze tint, gray tint, low-iron (ultra-clear), and acid-etched frosted finishes. Tinted glass must still meet the same structural requirements, so we specify tempered tinted panels at the appropriate thickness. Low-iron glass eliminates the green tint visible in standard clear glass, which many Palm Beach clients prefer.
